Meet Gosia Stano, who is 25 and she comes from Poland. Gosia is a TEFL graduate from TEFL in Spain. Gosia earned her Trinity CertTESOL course in February and is now working as a qualified teacher and marketing intern at TEFL in Spain. We have reached out to her for an interview to find out about her TEFL experience.

What were you doing before your TEFL Course?

I had recently graduated in Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw and had always been in love with learning languages and wanted to work in an international environment. I never thought I would become an English Teacher one day! Isn’t it incredible how life can catch us by surprise? 😊

What made you decide to take the TEFL Course in Malaga, Spain?

In Warsaw, I worked for 1.5 years as a Language Travel Agent. I was responsible for advising clients on choosing a tailor made language courses abroad. Thanks to this job, I got to know many language schools worldwide. As a result, for the past two summers, I had an opportunity to work for one of the language summer schools in the UK, in Cambridge. I was working as a House Manager and Course Assistant. That job gave me an insight into the ELT world. I got to know the English teachers and also the young learners who came to Cambridge for their English language summer courses. As a result, I wanted to try a new role, as an English Teacher. It seemed to be a very enriching and rewarding job. I was recommended by a friend to apply for TEFL in Spain. That’s how it all started!

What was your overall experience on the TEFL Course?

It was one of the most intense, enriching, and fulfilling experiences I have had in life so far! Throughout the course, I developed both personally and professionally as a  teacher. I remember the stress and fear before my first Teaching Practice. It was one of my personal aims to be able to overcome this fear, and with the constant support from the tutors and my peers, I was able to become more confident. During the Trinity CertTESOL course, you get the chance to study 4 hours of a new language (as part of your Unknown Language assignment). This was an amazing experience as we learnt Urdu! This really helped us to understand immersion teaching and allowed us to out ourselves in our students’ shoes. I can ensure you, that you won’t be the same person once you finish the course! That’s the beauty of the Trinity CertTESOL course, you learn something about the industry, but also about yourself.

Were there any highlights or funny moments on  the course?

I remember how happy I was after passing my phonetics test! I couldn’t stop smiling and all my peers were laughing at me 😊 Nevertheless, it was an amazing feeling that after just 2 weeks of studying an IPA chart, I was able to pass the test, despite all the other tasks we had to do as well! It gave me a kick to keep on going and work hard towards becoming a qualified teacher. Moreover, I was extremely happy that I have decided to rent a flat through Malaga City Flats which collaborates with TEFL in Spain. I shared an apartment with two girls who took the TESOL course with me – Laurelle from the USA and Emily from the UK. After spending almost everyday together we became very good friends and they were a great support during the course. I am extremely happy that I got to know them and can’t imagine having had this experience without the many laughs, accomplishments and shared experiences together.

What have you been doing since gaining your TEFL qualification?

I have since started my Teaching & Marketing internship at TEFL in Spain, where I will be gaining experience in teaching different groups and levels (young learners, teens and adults). Moreover, I am working with the amazing Esme Fegan in the marketing department where I am involved in the social media. I will stay here for 3 months, so I look forward to learning more about the industry and the teaching profession –  and of course exploring the beautiful city of Malaga!

Where will you go from here and what are your future plans?

The accredited Trinity CertTESOL gives you an opportunity to work anywhere in the world, which is incredible! As it is a recognized TEFL course, it is much easier to find job offers worldwide. Through the Careers Service session offered by TEFL in Spain, you learn about the many opportunities for qualified teachers. This session also covers CV and cover letter writing, where to look for and apply for jobs and interview preparation. I also gained an interesting insight into English summer schools in the UK so now I plan to apply for a position as an English teacher. After the summer… Who knows! I can point a finger on the map and apply for one of the many teaching vacancies available. The world is mine to discover, and CertTESOL is my passport to travel and teach! 😊

Do you feel TEFL has changed your life?

It definitely has changed my life! I am not the same person I was 4 weeks ago. I am more confident and have learnt so much both about this new profession, but also about myself. I think the constant reflection during the course, on our progress, is an inseparable part of this experience. I didn’t understand it during the course as it was difficult to evaluate, but now I really see and understand its importance.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to my success on this course and provided me with the support throughout these very intense four weeks – especially to my Course Director, Megan Wummer and Course Tutor, Andy Stock who were my incredible tutors. Thank you for everything!
